No Track Experience Needed
Autocross is a timed competition through a temporary cone course in a large, paved parking lot—most frequently at the Travis County Expo Center. You run one car at a time, meaning you never have to worry about wheel-to-wheel traffic. It’s just you against the clock.
Street Cars Welcome
You don't need a modified track weapon to compete. Whether you show up in a classic air-cooled, a Macan, a 911 Carrera S, or even a Miata, your daily driver is already capable. No roll cages or racing slicks are required.
Focus on Driver Skill
The courses are tight and technical, keeping top speeds generally below highway limits. Success here isn't about raw horsepower; it’s about vehicle control, vision, and smoothness. It is the absolute best place to safely learn car control.
A Day at the Grid
Nervous about your first event? Don’t be. Here is exactly how a typical Autocross day unfolds.
Park in your assigned grid spot. Empty your cabin and trunk of all loose items, clear out the floor mats, swap your tires (if you brought a dedicated set), and apply your car numbers.
Our inspectors will perform a quick, on-site safety check. We verify that your battery is firmly secured, wheel lugs are torqued, tires have adequate tread, and your helmet is up to date.
Before anyone starts their engine, we walk the entire course as a group. This is your chance to memorize the cone layout, visualize the driving line, and get braking tips from veteran drivers.

You'll be grouped into one of two groups. Group A will be on track while Group B works the course, monitoring for missed cones and fixing displaced cones. Each group does 5 runs, then swaps roles. Each run takes under a minute, and we've been able to get 1 practice run plus 10 runs at most events.

Driven by Volunteers
Autocross is a 100% volunteer-run event. The golden rule of PCA Autocross is simple: If you drive, you work. When your group is not actively driving, you will be assigned to a corner station out on the course. Your job is to watch for downed cones, quickly reset them, and use a radio to call in penalties to the timing trailer. Working the course is not just mandatory—it is actually the best way to study the racing lines of faster drivers and improve your own times.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. While autocross puts slightly more wear on your tires and brakes than a trip to the grocery store, it is vastly gentler than a high-speed HPDE track day. Porsches are engineered from the factory to handle this exact type of dynamic driving.
Yes. All drivers must wear a Snell-rated helmet (currently SA2015 or newer). HCR PCA often has a limited number of loaner helmets available for novices, but we highly recommend purchasing your own if you plan to attend regularly.
Absolutely. We fully support “dual-driver” cars. You and your co-driver will be placed in different run groups, or allowed a brief pause in the grid to swap seats between runs.
Yes! We encourage it. We have experienced instructors available to ride shotgun with novices. They will help you navigate the sea of cones, find the correct driving line, and build your confidence.
PCA utilizes a comprehensive classing system based on your car model and any modifications. Do not worry about figuring this out on day one—our registration team will help place you in the correct Showroom Stock, Production, or Modified class. If you have a Porsche, the classification tool at the bottom of the page can show you into which class you’ll likely be slotted.
